2007-08 WISCONSIN GUIDE TO UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
Financing Your Education A University of Wisconsin–Madison education is an investment in your future. Our academic excellence and great value combine to place us at the top of many “best buy” lists, including those in The Princeton Review, Barron’s Best Buys in College Education, and The Fiske Guide to Colleges. Still we realize that many students rely on financial assistance to help meet the difference between their resources and the cost of college. Close to sixty percent of undergraduates receive financial assistance totaling more than $138 million each year. Some students receive aid based on their financial need, others in recognition of their academic merit, athletic ability, or artistic talent. Student financial aid comes in three forms: Scholarships and Grants, which do not need to be repaid Loans, which are generally based on financial need and have to be repaid Work-Study, which provides aid in exchange for work This Guide to Undergraduate Scholarships provides general information on the wide range of scholarship and grant opportunities available to UW–Madison’s incoming freshmen and continuing undergraduate students. Primarily you will find details on the scholarships that are actually offered and funded by the university. These scholarships alone total more than $14 million. Keep in mind that there are a great many other sources of scholarship and grant money, including business and professional groups, service organizations, churches, and alumni associations. We encourage you to explore our financial aid Web site at www.finaid.wisc.edu for tips on identifying additional scholarship sources. Some other useful Web sites are www.fastweb.com and www.finaid.org. Lastly, do not be disappointed if you do not receive a scholarship as a freshman. While some scholarships are awarded in recognition of high school accomplishments and probable success at UW–Madison, the vast majority are reserved for students who excel once they actually arrive on campus. Prove yourself as a freshman and you will be recognized for that work as a sophomore, junior, and senior. How to Use This Guide Start by reviewing the various scholarship categories listed in the Table of Contents. If you’re an incoming freshman, programs that are open to you are listed in the first-year student section, as well as throughout the guide. The following categories are listed for each scholarship. Use this key to help understand the headings: Major: If the scholarship is limited to students in particular majors, that information will be listed here. (You must have officially declared your degree program to be eligible.) If the scholarship is open to all students regardless of major, school, or college, the major category has been eliminated. Class Level: This is your class standing as of the upcoming academic year. Scholarships listed as freshmen are open to students who will be enrolling as freshmen the following fall. Also note that this class level is based on the number of degree credits earned, not the number of years you have been in college. At UW–Madison, freshmen have earned 0–23 credits, sophomores 24–53, juniors 54–85, and seniors 86 or more credits. Eligibility: These are the requirements students must meet in order to apply and receive full consideration for the award. Some are listed as preferential criteria or factors considered, such as financial need or extracurricular activities. Amount: This is the value of the award and the categories covered (i.e., tuition, fees, room and board). Unless otherwise indicated, the amount is a one-time award. Number of Awards: This is the number of scholarships awarded each year. Deadline: This is the deadline (or priority date for full consideration) for applying. The date listed is for the year prior to eligibility; if the scholarship is for juniors and the deadline is March 1, that is March 1 of the sophomore year. Contact: This shows you who to contact for more information and how to obtain application materials.
